This is a 9FIFTY cap that has HAL embroidered on the front panel. HAL or HAL 9000 is the sentient computer/artificial intelligence which controlled the Discovery One (name of spacecraft in the film). HAL stands for Heuristically Programmed Algorithmic Computer. HAL is depicted in the movie as a camera/lens containing a red dot that has the ability to talk and interact with the astronauts aboard the Discovery One. HAL was instructed to withhold information about the true purpose of the mission to the astronauts on board, and being self aware, he found out that the astronauts were planning on disconnecting him since he was showing signs that he was unreliable because of the deliberate malfunctions he was creating in order to deceive them. This resulted into HAL trying to eliminate all the astronauts that were on board the Discovery One.
