  • José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Realonda was a Filipino nationalist and polymath during the tail end of the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines. He was executed by the Spanish colonial government for the crime of rebellion when his writings broke out. Noli Me Tángere and El Filibusterismo are novels written by him during the colonization of the country by Spain to describe perceived inequities of the Spanish Catholic priests and the ruling government. Mi Último Adiós (English; “My Last Farewell”) is a poem also written by him, on the eve of his execution by firing squad on December 30, 1896. The piece was one of the last notes he wrote before his death.
  • Andrés Bonifacio y de Castro was a Filipino revolutionary leader and the president of the Tagalog Republic. He is often called "The Father of the Philippine Revolution". He was one of the founders and later Supremo (Supreme Leader) of the Kataastaasan, Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan or more commonly known as "Katipunan", a movement which sought the independence of the Philippines from Spanish colonial rule and started the Philippine Revolution. Pag-ibig sa Tinubuang lupa is a poem written by him. The said poem was published in the first issue of Kalayaan. The poem exhorted Filipinos to join the crusade to achieve real Philippine independence.
